CO₂-equivalent lets different greenhouse gases be expressed on a common CO₂ mass basis for direct climate-impact comparison.

What is refrigerant CO₂e?

CO₂-equivalent converts the direct warming impact of a refrigerant mass into the equivalent mass of CO₂ using the selected GWP value.

CO₂e = Refrigerant Mass × GWP

Example: 1 kg R32 × GWP 675 = 675 kg CO₂e.

Why can published GWP values differ?

Regulatory programs can reference different IPCC or WMO scientific assessment reports. Updates to atmospheric lifetime, radiative efficiency and rounding can change published GWP values.

R1234yf: EPA Technology Transitions = GWP 1; some older EPA SNAP resources display GWP 4.

What is the difference between GWP and CO₂e?

GWP is a relative warming factor; CO₂e applies that factor to a specific greenhouse-gas mass.

Does lower CO₂e mean a refrigerant is a direct replacement?

No. Equal-mass CO₂e says nothing by itself about pressure, safety class, lubricant, charge, equipment approval or retrofit compatibility.

Should refrigerant charge be entered in kg or lb?

Either. Choose the matching input unit; the calculator converts lb to kg internally using 0.45359237 kg per lb.

Does this calculator include electricity-related HVAC emissions?

No. This calculator estimates direct refrigerant emissions only. Energy use, electricity carbon intensity and full lifecycle emissions are outside its scope.
