Common refrigerant transition pathways
Legacy refrigerants are increasingly being replaced by lower-GWP technologies, but there is rarely one universal replacement. Equipment design and regulations determine which alternatives are appropriate.
Depending on market, equipment and safety strategy, new HVAC platforms increasingly consider A2L and natural-refrigerant technologies.
Commercial refrigeration now spans transitional A1 blends, lower-GWP A2L blends and natural refrigerants.
The relevant replacement differs sharply between automotive, chillers, domestic refrigeration and commercial refrigeration.
R22 replacement is highly equipment-dependent. A service refrigerant, retrofit option and a complete new-system replacement are different engineering choices.
Refrigerant replacement can affect compressor operation, lubricant compatibility, pressure, heat exchanger performance, charge limits, flammability classification, controls and equipment approval. Always follow specific manufacturer and regulatory requirements.
