A GWP threshold is not the same as regulatory approval. A refrigerant below 150, 300, 700 or 750 can still be subject to application-specific safety, equipment, SNAP, building-code or local regulatory requirements.

What does refrigerant GWP mean?

GWP is useful for comparing direct climate impact, but it is only one part of refrigerant and system selection.

Global Warming Potential

Global Warming Potential compares the warming impact of a greenhouse gas with CO₂ over a defined time horizon. CO₂ is assigned GWP 1.

Example: GWP 675 → 1 kg refrigerant ≈ 675 kg CO₂e for direct 100-year climate comparison

Why can GWP values differ?

Different regulations can reference different IPCC or WMO assessment reports. Scientific updates to atmospheric lifetime, radiative efficiency and rounding can therefore produce different published values.

R1234yf example: EPA Technology Transitions = GWP 1; some older EPA SNAP resources display GWP 4.

Refrigerant GWP calculator questions

What is refrigerant GWP?

GWP compares a gas's warming impact with CO₂ over a defined time horizon. CO₂ is GWP 1; higher values indicate greater direct warming impact per unit mass.

How is GWP reduction calculated?

Subtract the alternative GWP from the baseline GWP, divide by the baseline, then multiply by 100. The calculator also handles increases and equal values.

What refrigerants have GWP below 700?

Examples in this tool include R32, R454B, R450A, R513A, R515B and several lower-GWP HFO/HFC blends. A sub-700 value does not by itself establish legal approval.

What refrigerants have GWP below 150?

Examples include R454C, R455A, R471A, R516A, R290, R600a, R717, R744, R1234yf and R1234ze(E). Safety and application rules remain separate.

What is the GWP of R410A?

R410A is GWP 2,088 on the EPA Technology Transitions reference basis used by this site.

What is the GWP of R32?

R32 is GWP 675 on the EPA Technology Transitions reference basis used by this site.

What is the GWP of R454B?

R454B is GWP 465 on the EPA Technology Transitions reference basis used by this site.

Why does R1234yf sometimes show GWP 1 and sometimes 4?

Different reference assessments are being used. EPA Technology Transitions currently uses 1, while some older EPA SNAP resources still display 4.

Does lower GWP mean a refrigerant can directly replace another?

No. Retrofit compatibility depends on the exact equipment, pressure architecture, lubricant, safety class, controls, manufacturer approval and applicable regulation.

What is the difference between GWP and CO₂e?

GWP is a relative warming factor; CO₂e applies that factor to an actual gas mass. Use the CO₂e Calculator when you know the refrigerant quantity.
